How to cold email for a digital marketing job

Digital marketing covers very different jobs: running ads, ranking pages, growing a social account, writing content. Work out which one the post is, then lead with one thing you grew in that channel, with the numbers from the platform’s own dashboard.

What marketing posts ask for

Read the post for the channel; the title often hides it. Posts ask for some of these:

  • Performance marketing: Meta Ads and Google Ads, budgets, and results such as cost per lead, cost per order and return on ad spend (ROAS).
  • SEO: keyword research, on-page fixes, content plans, and tools such as Google Search Console, Ahrefs or Semrush.
  • Social media: content calendars, reels, community, and growth on Instagram, LinkedIn or YouTube.
  • Content and email: writing, newsletters, and an email tool or CRM.
  • Analytics across all of them: Google Analytics (GA4), UTM links and reporting.
  • Tools that keep coming up: Canva, sometimes Figma and, for some roles, WordPress or basic HTML.
  • Agency or in-house: agencies want people who can juggle several clients; brands want depth in their own channel.

Your proof as a fresher

You don’t need a job to have marketing results. Lead with something you grew, measured in the platform’s own numbers:

  • Ads you ran for a small business, a relative’s shop or a college event, even on a few thousand rupees: what you spent, what it brought, and what you changed.
  • A blog, YouTube channel or Instagram page you grew: the numbers over time, and what worked.
  • A college fest or club campaign: registrations or tickets, and which channel brought them.
  • An internship: the campaign you ran or the content you made, and its results.
  • Certificates (Google Ads, Meta, HubSpot) as support for one of the above, never as the lead.

Your proof if you are switching in

Many marketers come from sales, writing, design or running a business. Lead with the overlap:

  • From sales: you know what makes a customer say yes. The objections you heard, and the copy or campaigns built on them.
  • From content writing or journalism: articles that rank or get read, with traffic from Search Console or the site’s analytics.
  • From design: creatives you made, and how they did in ads.
  • From running a business, a shop or a home brand: what you spent on ads, and what came back.

Your proof in two sentences

Sentence one: the channel, the budget or time, and the goal. Sentence two: what you changed, and the result in the platform’s own metric.

Social media, fresher

I ran my college fest’s Instagram for two months and grew it from 1,800 to 6,500 followers with daily reels of the build-up. The reels that showed the stage and the artists drove most registrations, which we tracked with a separate link for each post.

SEO, switching from content writing

As a content writer at a travel startup, I rewrote our 60 oldest blog posts around what people were searching for, using Search Console data. Their clicks from Google went from about 4,000 a month to 11,000 in five months.

Both are made-up examples. The numbers in yours must be your own, and ones you can explain in an interview.

An example email

Rohit, the founder of a D2C snacks brand, posts for a performance marketing executive, fresher or one year, and asks for “results you have driven”. Simran finished her BBA this year. This is the whole email.

Hi Rohit,

I saw your post for the Performance Marketing Executive role at Crunchbox, asking for results you have driven. I finished my BBA this year, and for the past year I have run Meta ads for small food businesses.

For a home bakery in Pune I ran Meta ads for two months on Rs 12,000, aimed at orders over WhatsApp. Moving the budget from boosted posts to short reels that showed the price brought the cost per order down from about Rs 180 to Rs 95, and the bakery now runs those ads itself.

Crunchbox sells the kind of product I have been advertising, and I’d like to learn performance marketing at a brand’s scale. My resume is attached, and I can show you the Ads Manager results on a call.

A made-up example: Simran, Rohit and Crunchbox are fictional. Every claim in the email comes from Simran’s own resume.

What makes it work:

  • The post asked for results; the email gives one, with the spend, the change and the outcome.
  • Small numbers, stated plainly, are believable, and show she knows which metric matters.
  • Food to food: the bakery’s problem is close to a snacks brand’s.
  • Offering to show Ads Manager makes the claim checkable.

The subject line

The role, your name, your stage, and the channel you are strongest in.

  • Performance Marketing Executive: Simran Kaur, BBA 2026, Meta ads
  • SEO Executive: Deepak Rawat, 2 years as a content writer
  • Social Media Intern: Mehak Arora, BMS 2027, grew our fest’s Instagram

Avoid subjects like “Job application” or “Resume”. The person who posted may have several openings, and the role first tells them which one.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Follower counts with no word on reach, engagement or sales. For performance roles, say what the money brought.
  • “I am a social media enthusiast.” Show a page or a campaign instead.
  • A list of twelve certificates as the email’s middle paragraph.
  • Agency results written as yours alone. Say which part you ran: the creative, the targeting or the reporting.
  • Applying to an SEO role with your Instagram work, or the other way round, without saying why it carries over.
  • Unpaid “trial tasks” that are really client work. A short test is normal; a week of free campaigns is not.

And the ones that hurt in every role: a guessed address, a generic resume, and an email longer than a phone screen. More in how to email a recruiter about a LinkedIn hiring post.

Where marketing posts appear

  • LinkedIn posts by D2C founders, marketing heads and agency owners. Agencies hire many freshers; ask what you would work on.
  • Startups’ job boards on Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby, under marketing or growth.
  • Marketing groups on Telegram and WhatsApp that forward openings.
  • Brands whose customers you understand. You can write the why-this-company paragraph from real knowledge.

A LinkedIn post search to start from (search Posts, sorted by Latest):

Marketing posts for freshers

("digital marketing" OR "performance marketing" OR SEO OR "social media") ("send your resume" OR "share your resume") fresher

4 of 5 ORs and ANDs

Keep only the channel you want: one channel with intern or fresher finds fewer posts, and closer ones. LinkedIn finds nothing at all once a search has more than five ORs and ANDs: see how to find hiring posts on LinkedIn. If there is no reply in about a week, follow up once.
