How to get a finance or accounts job with a cold email

The person reading wants to trust you with numbers that have to be right and on time. Lead with real accounting work you have done, in the software and the taxes the post names, and keep the email as tidy as a ledger.

What finance and accounts posts ask for

Titles include accounts executive, accountant, accounts assistant, finance analyst, audit associate and article assistant. The posts ask for:

  • Accounting software: Tally Prime most often, then Zoho Books or QuickBooks and, at larger companies, SAP.
  • Day-to-day accounting: vouchers and entries, accounts payable and receivable, bank reconciliation and month-end closing.
  • Indian tax work: GST returns, TDS, and help with audits and income tax filings.
  • Excel at a working level: pivot tables, lookups and clean schedules.
  • A qualification or stage: B.Com, M.Com, CA Inter or Final, CMA, ACCA or an MBA in finance. Some posts name the groups or levels cleared.
  • For finance analyst roles: budgets, forecasts and variance analysis (often called FP&A), monthly MIS reports, and explaining the numbers to managers.
  • For audit roles at CA firms: statutory, internal or tax audits, and travel to clients’ offices.

Your proof as a fresher

As a fresher, show accounting on real books, even small ones:

  • Articleship or an internship at a CA firm: the clients’ industries, the audits you worked on, and what you did yourself (vouching, GST returns, reconciliations).
  • Books you kept for a family business, a shop or a housing society, in Tally or Zoho: the entries, the GST filings and for how long.
  • A college role with money in it: a fest’s or a club’s accounts, budget and final settlement.
  • Your qualification stage, stated plainly, with your next attempt if one is coming up.

Looking for articleship? Write to a partner at a small or mid-size CA firm directly. Say which groups you have cleared, when you can start, and which work you want to learn: audit, direct tax or GST.

Your proof if you are switching in

People move into finance from operations, admin, banking and data roles. Lead with the money work you already do:

  • From a bank: reconciliations, loan documents or branch accounts you handled.
  • From operations or admin: vendor bills, petty cash, purchase orders or payroll inputs you managed, and for how many vendors or people.
  • From data or MIS: reports on costs or revenue that a finance team used. Finance analyst roles want exactly that.
  • From an unrelated field, with a new qualification: the course or exam you have cleared, and the books you have kept since.

Your proof in two sentences

Sentence one: the books or reports you handled, for whom, in which software. Sentence two: what you did to make them right or faster, and the result.

Articleship, CA Inter

During my articleship at a CA firm in Indore, I prepared the monthly GST returns in Tally for nine small business clients. I built a checklist for matching their purchase invoices with GSTR-2B, and the firm now uses it for every GST client.

Switching from operations

As an operations executive at a logistics company, I processed about 300 vendor bills a month and matched each one to its purchase order. I set up an Excel tracker that flags duplicate bills, and it caught two in its first quarter.

Both are made-up examples. The numbers in yours must be your own, and ones you can explain in an interview.

An example email

Sunita, the finance controller at a growing D2C brand, posts for an accounts executive, 0 to 2 years, Tally and GST, with an address for resumes. Aman finished his B.Com this year and has kept the books for his family’s hardware shop for three years. This is the whole email.

Accounts Executive (Tally, GST): Aman Gupta, B.Com 2026

Hi Sunita,

I saw your post for an Accounts Executive at Urbanloom. I finished my B.Com this year, and for the last three years I have kept the books for my family’s hardware shop in Tally Prime.

I enter every sale and purchase, reconcile the bank account each month, and prepare the monthly GST returns for our CA to file. Since I started matching our purchase invoices with GSTR-2B every month, we have not had a single mismatch notice.

A D2C brand has far more invoices than our shop, and I want to learn accounting at that scale in a finance team. My resume is attached, and I can join immediately.

A made-up example: Aman, Sunita and Urbanloom are fictional. Every claim in the email comes from Aman’s own resume.

What makes it work:

  • Tally and GST, the two things the post names, appear as work done, not as skills listed.
  • Three years of real books from a family shop count as experience, and the email treats them that way.
  • One habit with a result, no mismatch notices, shows care with numbers.
  • It is short and tidy. A finance controller notices a sloppy email.

The subject line

The role and the software or tax work the post names, then your name and your degree or qualification stage.

  • Accounts Executive (Tally, GST): Aman Gupta, B.Com 2026
  • Article Assistant: Riya Jain, CA Inter both groups cleared, from January
  • Finance Analyst (FP&A): Vivek Iyer, 2 years in MIS reporting

Avoid subjects like “Job application” or “Resume”. The person who posted may have several openings, and the role first tells them which one.

Mistakes to avoid

  • “I have strong knowledge of accounting principles.” Show the books you kept instead.
  • A wrong figure, a typo or a misspelt name. In finance, the email itself is checked for accuracy.
  • Hiding an exam attempt that didn’t go well. Say the stage you are at; it will be asked anyway.
  • Listing every accounting package you have heard of. Name the one or two you have used on real entries.
  • Attaching a client’s or an employer’s financial statements as a sample. They are confidential.
  • Asking about the stipend or the pay in the first email. That comes once they are interested.

And the ones that hurt in every role: a guessed address, a generic resume, and an email longer than a phone screen. More in how to email a recruiter about a LinkedIn hiring post.

Where finance and accounts posts appear

  • LinkedIn posts by finance controllers, CFOs and founders at startups and D2C brands, and by partners at CA firms.
  • CA firms’ own websites, which usually give an email address, for articleship and audit roles.
  • Company job boards on Greenhouse, Lever and Ashby, under finance or accounting.
  • Telegram and WhatsApp groups for CA and commerce students, which forward articleship and accounts openings. Check that the firm is real before you write.
